My 30 Days of Lists notebook for March

30 Days of Lists is starting up in three days! I love this project, it gives me a great feeling to be making something creative each day. Lists are such an easy way to do this. I will be using one of my handmade notebooks. You can find these in my shop here. They have 32 pages including the covers so they are perfect for this project.

If you want to participate in the March edition, please click the link on the right side of my blog for more details or just click here.

Here is a look at the inside pages. This round I am thinking layers and ephemera. I am definitely a hoarder so I like to use this projects as a stash buster!

I am going for a mix of vintage and modern ephemera. I think it'll look cool with the patterned papers I have chosen for this notebook.

I also have a stack of Polaroids (Impossible Film) that could be used in these pages. Still mulling that part over!

What kind of Lister are you? Do you keep it simple or do you like to pile on the embellishments?

Get Messy Season of Art 101 | 03

When I fist started art journaling, I went to an art store in Hong Kong and bought a whole bunch of Golden acrylic paint. Little did I know this would spark a love affair with their products. Some of the bottles I bought then are here in Beijing with me. I just love their creamy texture. Since then, I've tried other brands but Golden will forever be my fave. I picked out my favourite colors for the naming prompt.

Some of the colors I have reminded me of specific travels, or a certain moment in my life. That brought me back to the idea of synesthesia and I decided to associate these memories (sights, smells, textures) to the colors I had chosen. I loved doing this.

I have three other spreads to share today. The first one is a blended background type of page. Sometimes, I just need the act of blending paint, spreading the color on the page. Sometimes the process is all I am looking for. I added a 'peel and reveal' type of collage on the left.

As I mentioned when I posted this page on IG, each week I am making a spread where I am combining all the techniques from the first one. So this spread has watercolors, texture and a whole lot of different acrylic layers to it. (Stencil by Roxanne Coble)

And this final page came from watching Pam's lovely tutorial. I loved working this way, especially because it is so different from how I usually work. My problem is I tend to fall in love with backgrounds and I never want to cover stuff up! So for the white here, I mixed acrylic paint with lots of water so I could have the background peek through.

Here is the making of that pages, step-by-step:

I am looking forward to re-reading Misty's very informative post and trying out new things following Katie's examples. Thanks for coming by.

Recent art journaling pages | the red series

Ever since that man has taken office, watching the news bring me to a whole other level of anger and frustration and fear. Out of these feelings a series of art journal pages was born. These pages have definitely been cathartic and have helped me to deal with so much. But I feel that this is just the beginning.

Here is a look at these four spreads. I call them the Red Series because that color, which I associate with anger and blood, predominates. This series touches on women's rights. On being belittled by bullies. On rising against such people and situations. On protecting yourself from the assault of these bullies. On being angry and resisting. On demanding respect.

''Blood Moon Rising''.

''Crimson Tide''

''Boundaries''

''We are done asking nicely''

I feel assaulted by the news stream these days and yet I can't turn away because in doing so, my gesture can be interpreted as consent at the actions these bullies are taking. And I cannot condone these. They will see a rising tide of dissent and I will be a part of it.

Get Messy season of Art 101 | 02

Hello all, this week in the Season of Art 101, we are exploring texture. I have a love/hate affair with texture. I don't always take the time to include it because some of my pages come to me fast and I want to get them done fast too. So I don't take the time to build up layers.

That said, ink blots like this one bring immediate luscious texture and help open up your imagination. This isn't my usual color scheme and I think this is why I love it so!

This second spread came from the prompt about immersing one's self in the texture of something. I chose to do so about my dreams. The dreams I walk through at night. I had loads of fun with this one.

First I put modelling paste through punchinella (what is left after sequins are cut out) and a stencil.

then I rubbed an ink pad on the raised surface, mixing the colours slightly. And I finished by adding the ink faces and water soluble crayon marks. Looks pretty close to what I see at night to me!

My last exploration is this floral one.

Some of the flowers I received last week I dried out and some I pressed so I could use them in my art. These tiny dry purple ones are so fun to work with. They lose some of their colour when you put them in the modelling paste.

On the facing page, I tried something which backfired. So I took another flower and spray painted it white. I put it on this kraft paper to dry and just left it there because it looked so beautiful.

I want to explore this medium still. I feel like there are many possibilities and that I should maybe pay attention to some of them when I make my pages. to be continued. Thanks for coming.

Get Messy Season of Art 101 | 01

Ready? Let's do this! Welcome to the Season of Art 101. I am trying something new today. Since my Moleskine for this season is so small, I can photograph it against a pretty paper background. I think it's a little bit too intense and will probably go for something calmer next week! at least I tried something new.

Art 101 is starting with one of my favourite mediums: watercolours. My love for them is everlasting. The first thing I do when I get a set is make colour swatches. I just bought a few new sets so I tried them out in my journal. The set below is by Mungyo and this is in the order that the colours came in.

Once I was able to see the actual colour of the pans, I switched them to how I felt they should have been placed. I had a few discussions with Messians about the infamous ROYGB order. I went with more of a YORPBGDark order ha ha! The important thing is that it works for you.

I used the following pages to swatch my other sets:

These shimmering ones on the left are so dreamy and the Fragonard set had all of my favourites including the perfect shade of Payne's Gray.

I also made colour swatches for the amazing Gouache set I found here. These colours are so appealing to me!

The first page I made was a self-portrait using security envelopes. I loved this dark plaid pattern! Notice I added two of my Spirit animals there: the jackalope and butterfly.

One of the goals of this week's prompts was to connect to your inner child and just play. So I played with these soft watercolour backgrounds. Once they were dry, I added some doodles. these are exactly the doodles I would make growing up: unicorns, fairies, cats and princesses. I felt that the sunny background fitted nicely with these.

For the colder set of colours, I went with some doodles related to my profession and explored skulls. As a teenager and young adult, these would be everywhere in my planners, books, notes, etc.

My tutorial this week was about exploring faces with gouache. I enjoy gouache a lot and am looking forward to using it more in my journals.

So in love with these goth girls.

I played with my supplies, watching them blend and bleed.

My final page uses both watercolours and gouache combined. I like this technique a lot and hope to integrate it to my arsenal.

Thank you for coming by. I'm so excited to see where this Season will take us!

Color Blast | Orange Crush

I am happy to be the first one to play in Julia's Orange Journal (I call the Orange Crush). It isn't a color that I am usually attracted to. It makes me think of Fall and Halloween and Witches...which is good.

I put this pun on a piece of Japanese origami paper. Julia and I both share an unending love for Japan and all things Japanese.

In my mind, this handsome fellow is Oscar, Julia's cat.

The witches had to come here. I mean if you have a black cat, then obviously you're a witch.

My favourite page featuring a favourite Lorde song lyric.

The vintage vibe in the ephemera pieces I gathered fit nicely with some more modern art pieces (on the left a painting by Silvia Ji).

This little journal is off to the next person in our Color Blast circle. I enjoyed the time spent with it!

Please take a look at the other journals in our circle: Riet, Moriah, Julia, Lauren, Sarah and Lauren.
